Part of our Mask Fit Testing Australia: Complete Guide
Melbourne is Australia’s occupational hygiene heartland, and nowhere is that more evident than in the sheer volume of industries requiring respiratory protection every single day. From the high-rise cranes of the CBD to the pharmaceutical laboratories of Box Hill, from the construction sites of the North East Link to the aged care facilities dotting every suburb — organisations right across Victoria depend on properly fitted respirators to protect their workforce from hazardous air. That’s where Anitech comes in. We’re based here in Melbourne, we know Victoria’s workplace landscape, and we’ve spent two decades delivering RESP-FIT accredited fit testing to construction firms, healthcare networks, food manufacturers, and hundreds of other organisations across Greater Melbourne and regional Victoria.
Why Fit Testing Matters in Melbourne and Victoria
Victoria’s occupational health and safety landscape has changed significantly in recent years, and employers are rightly taking respiratory protection more seriously than ever. WorkSafe Victoria continues to strengthen enforcement around hazardous substance exposure, and the October 2024 crystalline silica regulations — which banned engineered stone benchtops and wall cladding — sent a clear signal that silica exposure is not negotiable. In residential construction sites across Melbourne’s suburbs and outer growth corridors, that ban has become the new reality.
But silica is only part of the story. Melbourne’s construction sector faces ongoing exposure to dust, welding fumes, and other particulates on projects ranging from hospital redevelopments to major road tunnels. Healthcare facilities — including powerhouses like the Royal Melbourne Hospital, The Alfred, and Monash Medical Centre — must protect staff from biological aerosols, pharmaceutical dusts, and chemical vapours. Manufacturing plants in the western suburbs (Sunshine, Footscray, Laverton) handle everything from automotive components to food processing. Pharmaceutical laboratories require respiratory protection against active pharmaceutical ingredients. Every worker in every one of these environments needs a fit test that’s compliant with AS/NZS 1715:2009, and every employer needs the peace of mind that comes with documented compliance.
How Anitech Provides Fit Testing Across Melbourne and Victoria
We don’t operate from a clinic waiting room. Instead, we come to you. Our RESP-FIT accredited fit testers conduct fit testing onsite at your workplace — whether that’s a construction site office, a manufacturing plant floor, a hospital department, or a busy food processing facility. This approach has several advantages:
Convenience. Workers don’t lose time travelling to a distant clinic. Testing can be scheduled around operational requirements, and we typically offer same-week availability for urgent needs.
Realism. Testing workers in their actual work environment, with the actual respirators they’ll be using, gives far more reliable results than clinic-based testing with generic equipment.
Compliance documentation. Each worker receives an individual fit test record, including their fit factor, the specific respirator tested, and the date — everything WorkSafe Victoria and your insurance auditors expect to see.
Quantitative testing. We use PortaCount quantitative fit testing, the gold-standard method under AS/NZS ISO 16975-3:2023. Unlike subjective qualitative tests, quantitative testing measures actual air leakage and produces an objective fit factor that proves compliance.

Industries We Serve in Melbourne and Victoria
Construction and engineering. High-rise development, tunnelling (legacy projects from West Gate Tunnel and North East Link), remedial works, carpentry, metal fabrication. Silica exposure remains a critical concern following Victoria’s engineered stone ban.
Healthcare and aged care. Hospital departments, private aged care facilities, dental surgeries, medical research laboratories. Protection against biological aerosols, pharmaceutical dusts, and sterilisation chemicals.
Manufacturing and automotive. Western suburbs plants, including food processing, automotive components, electronics assembly, metal finishing. Welding fumes, grinding dusts, chemical exposure.
Pharmaceutical and biotechnology. Active pharmaceutical ingredient handling, vaccine preparation, clinical trial manufacturing.
Food processing and packaging. Flour mills, food preparation facilities, spice handling, grain storage operations.
Laboratories and research. University research facilities, diagnostic laboratories, environmental testing facilities.
Respirator Fit Testing for Sikh Workers in Victoria
WorkSafe Victoria has issued guidance accepting the Singh Thattha beard wrap as a compliant solution for Sikh workers whose religious obligations prevent them from shaving. Our RESP-FIT accredited testers are fully trained in conducting fit tests with beard wraps in place, ensuring both religious respect and regulatory compliance. If your workforce includes Sikh employees, we can ensure their fit testing meets AS/NZS 1715 requirements without compromise.
What to Expect During Your Fit Test
When you book a fit test with Anitech, here’s what happens:
- Pre-test consultation. Our tester discusses the hazard, the respirator type, and any medical considerations (asthma, claustrophobia, etc.).
- Respirator selection and positioning. The correct size and model is selected, and the wearer practises positioning and seal.
- Quantitative testing. Using the PortaCount machine, we measure air leakage under a series of movements and breathing patterns.
- Pass or retest. If the fit factor meets the required threshold (typically ≥100 for P2), the test passes. If not, we refit and retest.
- Documentation. You receive a formal fit test certificate, and records are stored securely.
Your Responsibilities as an Employer
Under AS/NZS 1715 respirator fit testing requirements, your organisation must:
- Identify all workers who require respiratory protection
- Ensure fit testing is conducted before those workers first use a respirator
- Retest whenever a trigger occurs (new respirator model, significant facial change, poor fit reported)
- Maintain individual fit test records for at least 5 years
- Communicate fit testing requirements clearly to workers and managers
We handle the testing; you maintain the compliance register and the commitment to retest on schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does fit testing cost in Melbourne?
Pricing depends on the number of workers and the testing method. Quantitative testing (PortaCount) costs more than qualitative, but provides superior compliance documentation. We offer competitive fixed rates for both single-person tests and bulk contracts. Contact us for a quote based on your needs.
Can I book a fit test online?
Yes. You can contact us via our website, and we’ll confirm availability and schedule a mutually convenient date. For urgent requirements, we often have same-week slots available.
Does my worker need to fast before a fit test?
No, there’s no need to fast. We do recommend avoiding heavy meals immediately before testing, as some people find the seal pressure uncomfortable on a full stomach. Normal hydration is fine.
What if my worker fails the fit test?
If the fit factor is insufficient, we refit the respirator (different size, model, or both) and retest. The vast majority of workers pass on a second attempt with a better-fitting respirator. Rarely, a worker’s facial anatomy may make P2 respirators very difficult to fit; in those cases, options include full-face respirators (which have much higher fit factors) or switching to powered air-purifying respirators (PAPRs). Your occupational hygienist can advise.
How long is a fit test valid for?
Under AS/NZS 1715, a fit test is valid until one of the retesting triggers occurs: a new respirator model, significant facial change (weight loss/gain >10%, dental work, surgery), or a documented instance of poor fit. As best practice, we recommend annual retesting even if no trigger has occurred.
Is fit testing required by law in Victoria?
Yes. AS/NZS 1715:2009 is referenced in the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and WorkSafe Victoria expects organisations using respirators for RPE (respiratory protective equipment) to have documented fit testing in place. Failure to fit test is a compliance breach.
