Anitech provides RESP-FIT accredited respirator fit testing across Adelaide and South Australia — delivering quantitative PortaCount testing, comprehensive health monitoring records, and full WHS compliance support to construction, manufacturing, healthcare and mining workplaces. Whether you operate a single site in the Adelaide CBD or manage regional facilities across Whyalla, Port Augusta and Roxby Downs, our team has the experience and equipment to bring fit testing to you.
Why Adelaide and South Australia Need Specialised Fit Testing
South Australia’s industrial footprint is substantial and increasingly complex. The State’s major employers and growth sectors all depend on respiratory health effects of DPM protection:
For workplaces with diesel-powered equipment, understanding DPM workplace exposure limit is an essential part of WHS compliance.
Defence and Aerospace Manufacturing
South Australia is home to some of Australia’s most strategically important defence manufacturers:
ASC (Australian Submarine Corporation) — Osborne, Adelaide
Submarine construction and servicing involves extensive exposure to metal fumes, welding byproducts, coatings and composite materials in confined spaces. The complexity of submarine interiors means workers may be wearing respirators for extended periods in challenging environments.
BAE Systems Australia — Osborne, Adelaide
Naval frigate and surface ship construction requires similar respiratory protection protocols as submarine work. Metal cutting, welding, grinding and surface coating all generate hazardous aerosols.
Innvest Industries — Defence contractor, Adelaide
Specialised manufacturing and fabrication work for defence systems.
These facilities require rigorous fit testing to comply with defence procurement standards and occupational health obligations. Anitech has experience working with defence contractors and understands the compliance environment.
Mining and Resources
Olympic Dam (Roxby Downs) — BHP Limited, 560 km north of Adelaide
One of Australia’s largest underground mines, hosting copper, uranium and gold. DPM monitoring in underground mining exposes workers to mineral dust, diesel fumes, ground support materials and thermal stresses. Deep underground work requires robust respiratory protection and fit testing.
Prominent Hill (Coober Pedy region) — Helix Resources
Gold and copper mining in South Australia’s interior, with significant occupational dust and fume exposure.
Whyalla Steelworks (OneSteel/GFG Alliance) — Port Augusta region
Iron and steel production generates significant metal fumes, silica dust and coatings exposure. Workers in blast furnaces, rolling mills, and coating lines require appropriate respiratory protection.
Construction and CBD Development
Adelaide’s CBD is undergoing significant development:
– Lot Fourteen mixed-use precinct (health, innovation, residential)
– CBD tower developments
– Suburban residential construction
– Road works and demolition
All of these generate dust, silica exposure, and fume hazards requiring fit testing.
Healthcare and Infection Control
Adelaide’s major healthcare facilities include:
– Royal Adelaide Hospital
– Flinders Medical Centre
– Queen Elizabeth Hospital
– Women’s and Children’s Hospital
– Numerous private hospitals and clinics
COVID-19 pandemic protocols normalised fit testing in healthcare, but ongoing requirements for respiratory protection in infection control, theatre environments, and isolation units continue. Healthcare workers have specific fit testing challenges — we address these directly.
Food Manufacturing and Processing
South Australia’s food and wine industry includes:
– Processing facilities with grain dust, food powder and organic aerosol exposure
– Abattoirs and meat processing (blood aerosols, microbiological exposure)
– Dairy facilities
– Beverage manufacturing

Anitech’s Adelaide and SA Fit Testing Services
RESP-FIT Accredited Testers
All Anitech fit testers hold current RESP-FIT accreditation — the nationally recognised credential for fit test technicians in Australia. Your test will be conducted by an accredited professional, and your records will be defensible in SafeWork audits and workers compensation claims.
Quantitative PortaCount Testing
We use the TSI PortaCount Pro+ CNC instrument — the global standard for quantitative respirator fit testing. Rather than subjective qualitative methods (saccharin taste tests), PortaCount delivers objective numerical fit factors that demonstrate the quality of your seal and provide a strong compliance record.
Onsite Testing
For workplaces with 20+ workers requiring fit testing, we bring our equipment to you. Onsite testing minimises disruption, allows us to fit test workers in their actual working environment (with the safety equipment they will actually use), and reduces overall time and cost for larger teams.
Individual Fit Testing Reports
Every worker receives a detailed PDF report immediately after testing, containing:
– Personal details and test date
– Tester accreditation information
– Respirator model, manufacturer and size
– Fit factors for each of the eight test exercises
– Overall fit factor and pass/fail result
– Next recommended test date
Reports are provided both to the worker and filed in your organisation’s health monitoring records (retained for 30 years, as required by WHS Regulation 636).
Multiple Respirator Models
If a worker fails a fit test with one model, we have access to a range of P2, P3 and N95 respirator variants to cycle through until we find the right fit. This includes Australian-designed and manufactured options (Respro, PuMa) as well as international brands (3M, Moldex, Honeywell).
SafeWork SA Context and South Australia-Specific Requirements

SafeWork SA is South Australia’s workplace regulator. Key points relevant to fit testing:
- Respirator use must comply with AS/NZS 1715:2009 (Australian/New Zealand Standard for selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective devices)
- Fit testing must be conducted by an accredited tester (RESP-FIT registration)
- Fit testing records are classified as health monitoring records under the WHS Regulation and must be retained for 30 years after employment ends
- During workplace inspections, SafeWork SA inspectors will request to review fit testing records for workers using tight-fitting respirators
- Failure to have fit testing records or having an unaccredited tester conduct fit testing can result in improvement notices and prosecution
Anitech’s accreditation and record-keeping processes ensure full compliance with SafeWork SA expectations.
Defence Sector Specialisation
Submarine construction and naval surface ship work involves particularly complex respiratory hazard profiles. Workers in submarine compartments face:
- Stainless steel and aluminium welding (stainless steel fume contains nickel, chromium and manganese)
- Composite materials and advanced coatings (epoxy, polyurethane, phenolic compounds)
- Confined space work with limited ventilation
- Extended duration exposure (shifts can be long)
- Full-face respirators and powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) are often required
- Quantitative fit testing (PortaCount) is the standard method for full-face respirators
Anitech has experience conducting PortaCount fit testing for full-face and PAPR systems in defence manufacturing contexts. We understand the compliance documentation requirements and the need for robust health monitoring records.
How to Book Fit Testing in Adelaide and South Australia
For Small Teams (1–20 workers)
Contact Anitech to arrange clinic-based fit testing in Adelaide, or request onsite testing if you can accommodate a group session. We typically conduct fit testing on:
– Weekdays, 8 AM – 5 PM
– Weekend and evening sessions by arrangement
– Regional South Australia by appointment (travel times apply)
For Larger Teams (20+ workers)
We provide onsite fit testing at your workplace. This is often more efficient and cost-effective than transporting workers to a clinic. Onsite sessions require:
– A suitable testing area (ideally 20–30 m², with adequate lighting and minimal air disturbance)
– A list of workers to be tested, with their current respirator use (if any)
– Advance notice (typically 2–4 weeks) to coordinate scheduling and travel
For Regional Sites
Olympic Dam, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Roxby Downs, Coober Pedy and Mount Gambier are all within our service area. Regional fit testing sessions require advance planning to account for travel time. Group sessions at regional sites are more efficient than individual appointments.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a fit test take?
A single PortaCount fit test takes approximately 15–20 minutes per worker, including setup, eight test exercises, and documentation. If testing multiple workers, the second and subsequent tests are slightly faster. We typically fit test 15–20 workers in a full onsite day.
What is the cost of fit testing?
Pricing depends on the number of workers, location, and whether testing is clinic-based or onsite. Contact Anitech for a quote. Larger groups and onsite sessions typically have lower per-worker costs.
Do we need to do anything to prepare for fit testing?
Workers should wear the respirator they will actually use at work. If you have not yet selected a respirator model, our tester can bring options to trial during fit testing. Facial hair must be absent or minimal (facial hair compromises tight-fitting respirator seals). Workers should avoid heavy makeup or cosmetics that could affect seal quality.
How often do we need to retest?
Most employers conduct annual fit tests as the minimum frequency. Some manufacturers or accreditation standards require more frequent testing (e.g. every 6 months). If a worker’s face shape changes significantly (weight change, surgery), a new fit test should be conducted.
What if workers fail fit testing?
Failure is relatively common, especially on first attempt. If a worker fails with one model, we cycle through alternative models to find one that achieves an adequate fit. If no tight-fitting respirator achieves a passing fit factor, PAPR or supplied air respirators are recommended.
Are fit test records kept private?
Yes. Fit testing records are classified as health monitoring records under the WHS Regulation and are protected as sensitive personal information. They are stored securely and access is limited to occupational health personnel, the worker themselves, and regulators. General staff do not have routine access.
Does the PortaCount damage the respirator?
No. The PortaCount uses a very small sampling tube that draws air through the respirator. It does not damage the mask or affect its integrity. The respirator can be used for work immediately after testing.
Can we use fit testing records from a previous employer?
You can accept fit testing records from a previous employer if the test was conducted by a RESP-FIT accredited tester, is less than 12 months old, and the respirator model and hazard exposure remain unchanged. However, you should maintain a copy of the record in your own health monitoring system.
