Benzoyl chloride WEL 2.8 mg/m³ (0.5 ppm) — monitoring strategy and interpretation

Benzoyl chloride is a volatile, reactive acyl chloride with a new 8-hour WEL of 2.8 mg/m³ (0.5 ppm). WES remains the reference until 30 November 2026; WEL applies from 1 December once implemented. Check the WHS regulator.

Measurement and SEGs

Exposure is typically vapour, with aerosol possible during spraying, vigorous transfer or containment failures. Define analyte, units, 8-hour TWA, task samples and peaks. Do not invent a STEL.

  • Drum/IBC batch charging and vapour return.
  • In-process sampling; filter and strainer change.
  • Kilo-lab, pilot plant and maintenance line breaks.
  • Spill response, waste and contractor work.

Separate charge operators, sampling technicians, filter crews, maintenance and laboratory SEGs. Log vessel temperature, purge, LEV, open time, location and RPE.

Sampling strategy

  1. Full-shift personal samples on representative campaign days plus task samples for open transfers.
  2. Agree sorbent/media with the laboratory for stability and recovery.
  3. Document flow, breakthrough, blanks, storage and transport.
  4. Use enough replicates to show campaign variability; static samples diagnose LEV only.

Interpretation and controls

Use 2.8 mg/m³ (0.5 ppm) as planning benchmark now and compliance comparator from 1 December when in force. Report LOD/LOQ and partial-shift assumptions. Peaks matter for irritation and control design; never fabricate a STEL. Address dermal risk separately.

  • Closed charging, sealed transfer, vapour return and LEV.
  • Minimise open time; use line-break permits and spill drills.
  • Select compatible gloves, clothing and vapour RPE with fit testing.
